Vital - KolKata Railway Children

Friday, 11 May 2012 07:00 Published in Charity

One third of the world′s poor are in India. The streets of Kolkata in West Bengal are a place of refuge and a place of danger where street children live, eat, play, sleep and work. There are thousands of unreached, vulnerable and disadvantaged children who work in hazardous and dangerous conditions, from construction workers to rag pickers, forced by poverty, and by exploitative adults into the sex industry, while others turn to petty theft or join gangs for self-protection. Some children choose to live on the streets as an alternative to poverty or violence at home, often falling prey to sexual and financial exploitation. There are thousands of children who are still unreached and at high risk who also have the right to be properly cared for and protected.

VITAL aims to provide basic life necessities to disadvantaged and vulnerable children who suffer from the oppression and injustice of absolute poverty. VITAL supports projects which ensure thousands of children living in extreme poverty gain access to emergency shelter, quality education, healthcare, nutrition, clean water and other emergency and protective services.

Vital is a charity that has very limited resources but is doing great work with children in India. Some of their programs include working with children in the red light district and children living on railways. We put this video together using existing photography and video the charity had but did not know what to with.

The evening consists of photography and multimedia screenings at the beginning, followed by photographers breaking off into smaller groups, sharing and giving feedback on each others work. Its a night for photographers to get a fresh perspective on their projects, talk about ideas and work through problems they are having and to generally network with other photographers.

It’s relaxed and informal, and theres a bar for any thirsty photographers.

COMMENTS

‘MediaMash provides a relaxed setting for photographers to get feedback and critic on their work by other photographers. It’s a chance to lay out your prints or flick through your laptop and, in small groups, get peer to peer support on your work.’(Rajan Zaveri, Firefly Photofilms)

'I want to say how great it was and how delighted I am to have found such an enthusiastic group of photographers with whom I can talk about ideas, techniques, events…The discussions at the tables were rich, deep, engaged. The kind that gives you hope in youth and make you want to trust again in the dynamism of some individuals.’ (Julien Frentzel, Photographer and Writer)

'I had a fantastic time over the MediaMash and I think it is a great great way to discuss our work and artistic views. It had a relaxed atmosphere with lots of enthusiasm as well.' (Cátia Sousa, Photographer and Director)
